About this book
Marriage is a novel by Susan Ferrier. An epigraph before the text says that life consists not of a series of illustrious actions, and that the greater part of our time passes in compliance with necessities. The prefatory note says Miss Ferrier's novels have, since their first appearance, suffered curtailment in all subsequent editions, and that the present edition is the first reprint from the original editions.
A letter headed Sir Walter Scott to Miss Ferrier says that, if he had a spark of gratitude, he ought to have written well-nigh a month ago to thank her in no common fashion for Destiny. A character named Mr. Douglas says, “You have not asked after any of your Glenfern friends,” hoping to touch a more sympathetic chord. The text says that with a divorce obtained, the Duchess of Altamont, except to her own family, was as though she had never been.
