About this book

A face glimpsed in a mirror becomes a clue to family history when Herries confronts the narrator about a mark on his forehead. The narrator has been trying to reproduce the expression that alarms a girl entering the room. Herries connects it with inherited guilt and sorrow, then tells a story about struggles for Scotland's throne. Walter Scott brings the weight of ancestry into an uneasy exchange between two people.

Published in 1824, this historical novel concerns eighteenth century Jacobite loyalties. Its introduction considers Charles Edward's appeal to his followers and the political schemes that continued after the rebellion of 1745. The contents move from a sequence of letters to numbered chapters, while the middle excerpt turns a conversation into a recollection of older conflicts. Readers interested in how political commitments become entangled with family memory will find a story that moves between public history and a narrator's uncertainty about his own identity.
