About this book

Men and Measures presents itself as a history of weights and measures, covering both ancient and modern forms of measurement. The discussion of medicines says an ounce of solid medicine is most rarely prescribed, and that such an exceptional prescription might mean an Imperial ounce. The account of the corn trade calls the arrangement of its measures convenient and argues that preventing fraud, especially in retail trade, should be the main object of measurement laws.

The discussion of land measures says an ancient system of seed-measures, fixed geometrically, survives in Southern France and indeed throughout most of France. A note on regional units says the Scottish and Irish miles have long been practically obsolete, while the Guernsey land measures have local statutory standing.
