The Doctor, subtitled A Tale of the Rockies, is a book by Ralph Connor. The contents list names, among others, "The Old Stone Mill", "The Raising", "Ben's Gang" and "The Fight with Death".
The first chapter, "The Old Stone Mill", opens by saying there were two ways by which one could get to the Old Stone Mill. Mrs. Boyle fills the girl's pail with buttermilk, rolls a pat of butter in a clean linen cloth and sets it in a small basket, and says of scone-making that there is no recipe at all. Mrs. Boyle looks after the girl and says, "Poor motherless lassie", adding that it is a heavy care she has, and the minister, poor man, he can't see it. A chapter headed "The Raising" opens with the building of a bank-barn, a watershed in farm chronology. McKenty and an editor talk about a doctor who, the editor says, is a number one doctor, and night and day he is on the road.
