This story was transcribed from Orbit Science Fiction, September 1953. A starship has spent hundreds of years crossing between solar systems, and its crew of a thousand have grandparents who never set foot on a planet. For every normal birth there are five or six mutant young, and the ship's shielding, jets and air conditioning are failing. Another passage describes the ship coming down on the desert world of Ghakk, where the mutants settle in separate valleys.
In another passage a long-legged outcast leaves his people's canyon, where his parents had kept him hidden until he was grown. Characters named Malan and Vanna talk with a being called the Shape about crossing a great rift at a spot where it narrows to perhaps a hundred feet and three trees grow close together. The Shape blossoms a blue ear from his chin. A further scene has them enter the twisted metal corridors and dusty control room of a wrecked ship.
