About this book
Albert Pike prepared this large volume in 1871 as the readings of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry for the Southern Jurisdiction of the United States. His preface says he was about equally author and compiler, since roughly half of it is taken from other writers and reworked. Each section follows a degree, beginning with the Apprentice and the twelve-inch rule, and opens on a moral theme such as force that needs guidance by intellect.
Beyond ethics, the lectures range across the mystery rites of antiquity, early Christian sects, Kabbalah and the symbols of older religions, asking what earlier thinkers believed about God and the human mind. The preface notes that 'Dogma' means teaching here, and that any reader may reject what seems unsound.
At around 440,000 words it is a dense reference for students of Freemasonry, comparative religion and nineteenth-century esoteric thought.
