About this book
Chitra, a Play in One Act is a work by Rabindranath Tagore. The preface calls the play a lyrical drama that was written about twenty-five years ago and is based on a story from the Mahabharata. The preface tells that Arjuna came to Manipur, where he saw Chitrangada, the beautiful daughter of Chitravahana, the king of the country. The text says Arjuna promised and took Chitrangada to wife, and lived in her father's capital for three years.
The characters list the gods Madana and Vasanta and the mortals Chitra, daughter of the King of Manipur, and Arjuna, a prince of the house of the Kurus. In Scene I, Chitra asks whether the one addressed is the god with the five darts, the Lord of Love, and Madana answers that he was the first born in the heart of the Creator. In Scene IX, Chitra asks, My lord, has the cup been drained to the last drop, and a stage direction has her unveiling in her original male attire.
