About this book
My First Battle: A Sergeant's Story is by Adam Mickiewicz. The narrator, a light artillery sergeant, confesses that he was truly in love with war, but only during the first week of his military career. The first battle has the most particular similarity to first love.
The narrator says the Polish soldier will never forget about the Battle of Stoczek. To make a definite choice, the narrator ran through the streets of Warsaw, eyeing closely the uniforms of several regiments. The leader says: My children, I promised to lead you to the enemy; you promised to beat him, and so both you and I have kept our words.
