About this book
A regiment pauses among the mountains of Portugal after a tiring pursuit of the French army. While the soldiers gather around their cooking fires, Corporal Beane returns from a damaged house carrying an injured child. His wife sets aside the meal to care for the boy, helped by the young bugler Tom Jones. Their rough banter gives way to practical kindness as they prepare to carry him with them.
George Manville Fenn places this historical adventure in the Peninsular War. Camp life, difficult marches and the needs of wounded people bring the conflict close to its youngest characters. In a later scene, Dick follows a call for help through dark rocks and bushes, then struggles to bring water to a suffering man.
