About this book
Observations on the Florid Song, or Sentiments on the Ancient and Modern Singers, is by Pier Francesco Tosi. The book is translated into English by Mr. Galliard and has explanatory annotations and examples in Musick, useful for all performers, instrumental as well as vocal.
The contents list observations for one who teaches a Soprano, and chapters Of the Appoggiatura, Of the Shake, On Divisions, Of Recitative, Of Airs, Of Cadences and Of Passages or Graces. The text compares the most celebrated Singers in both Stiles and says that the Moderns are arrived at the highest Degree of Perfection in singing to the Ear, and that the Ancients are inimitable in singing to the Heart. The text says that of Pierre-Simone nothing more is known but that he loved his Bottle, and when he had run up a Bill in some favourite Place, he composed a Cantata and sent it to a certain Cardinal, who never failed sending him a fixed Sum.
