The Light Shines in Darkness

Coffee on a country-house verandah becomes an anxious family discussion in Leo Tolstoy's drama. Mary Ivánovna worries that her husband, Nicholas, has changed since bereavement and illness led him to study the Gospels. His wish to give away property alarms his relatives, who also suspect he will intervene on behalf of peasants accused of cutting the family's trees. He objects to the careers his son considers. Mary sees these convictions through the practical demands of raising their children and keeping the household secure.

The Light Shines in Darkness brings this domestic disagreement into a wider debate about faith, land ownership and military service. In a discussion with Father Gerásim, Nicholas challenges the Church's authority and its support for practices he considers contrary to the Gospels. The English translation lets readers follow competing voices in direct exchanges: a husband pursuing moral consistency, a wife carrying family responsibilities, and relatives who fear the consequences of his decisions.
