About this book

Fancy Free includes a piece headed The Game of Life, whose speaker says that, in the spirit, a strange pastime was seen not long ago. The speaker says that at first the pastime seemed no more than a big cricket-match, with all the world looking on and humanity playing against its enemies. Among others, Recording Angels scored, Time umpired and Death bowled tirelessly and unchanged through the ages occupied by the Game of Life.

The text says a phantom rarely reaches the age of three hundred without learning to control his temper. Ethel asks whether there are no brave men who do not hunt. The Professor says the wretch was overborne by the nameless horror of a visit from the grave. A passage says that to say Mr. Garrick surprised Mr. Boswell by the vigour and fire of his retort would be to state the case too mildly.
