About this book

A crowded steerage deck becomes the starting point for Edward Alfred Steiner's account of immigration to the United States. He addresses a passenger from the first cabin whose pity for the travellers comes mixed with contempt. Through introductions and conversation, he helps her see individuals within the crowd. The contents extend this interest to immigrants' home communities, their arrival in America, urban neighbourhoods, religion and politics.

Published in 1906, the book also examines the practical burdens of working life. The middle passage discusses money sent to relatives in Hungary, uncertain employment and company control of housing. Church disputes and language barriers further complicate relations within immigrant communities and with their neighbours. Steiner combines sympathetic encounters with generalizations about national groups, giving readers material for studying both American social conditions and the assumptions of the observer who describes them.
