About this book
Our Town and Civic Duty is a reader by Jane Eayre Fryer. A note headed Civics for American Children says that Part I of this reader contains material emphasizing the civic virtues of courage, self-control, thrift, perseverance and kindness to animals. A line quoted at the front urges that teachers and other school officers increase materially the time and attention devoted to instruction bearing directly on the problems of community and national life.
In one episode, Bob's father protests and makes Farmer Thornycroft angry, and the farmer dismisses him and gives him no wages at all. A scarecrow flaps out at Bob with one sleeve, and Bob thinks he hears a voice call after him, Better not, Bob! better wait a bit! Dick begins to descend, rung by rung, bearing his heavy load, with the unconscious Shorty over his back. The text says Danforth tells us about Nolan's last hours and calls him dear old Nolan.
