About this book
Persia Revisited (1895) comes with remarks on H.I.M. Mozuffer-ed-Din Shah and the present situation in Persia (1896), by General Sir Thomas Edward Gordon. The preface describes being struck, on revisiting Tehran last autumn, with the evidence of progress and improvement in Persia, and forming the idea of publishing a short account of a journey. A passage on the oil-wells says there is a great dash of the gambling element in the oil-well business at Baku.
One passage describes a dark fluid spouting up from two to three hundred feet over wells, with the flow calculated at fifty thousand gallons an hour. The text says that up to the time of the present ruling dynasty the princes of the blood were immured in the harem, where their education was left to women and their attendants.
