About this book

Barrie's most famous creation began on the stage and reached its final form in this 1911 novel, which fixed Peter Pan in the imagination for good. Peter, the boy who refuses to grow up, flies through a nursery window and carries Wendy Darling and her brothers off to Neverland, a place of mermaids, fairies, Lost Boys, and the ticking, hook-handed pirate who hunts them. Beneath the adventure runs a stranger, sadder current about childhood, memory, and the cost of never letting go. J. M. Barrie (1860-1937) was a Scottish novelist and playwright best remembered for creating Peter Pan. He gave the copyright of the work to a children's hospital, and the character has become part of the cultural landscape.
