About this book

In fifteenth-century France, the ideals of chivalry face a ruler who treats honour as a political convenience. Walter Scott's introduction portrays Louis XI as witty, suspicious and ambitious, with a keen understanding of power. It also describes changes in military service, as merchants help finance paid soldiers and the Crown gains greater control. These tensions give the historical novel a setting shaped by competing ideas of duty and advantage.

Quentin's concern for Countess Isabelle leads him to consider how to warn her of possible deception. After an awkward encounter in a bishop's private garden, he walks into Liege, where crowded shops, armour, trading goods and canals absorb his attention. Scott moves between personal anxiety and the visible workings of a wealthy city. Readers interested in historical adventure can follow the interplay of affection, social rank and distrust, alongside the question of what honour means in a world of calculation.
