About this book
A tagline says that every year men slaughter deer by the thousands, and that it seems only fitting that the tables be turned once in a while. Earl Robinson twists the wheel as the automobile skids toward the ditch, gets the feel of the ice hidden under the snow, and straightens the car. Robinson sees a weird, shadowy form on the road just in time, presses hard on the brake, and the car jerks into the ditch.
Robinson says that they found a dead man on the road last night, nobody they knew. Norm Boody answers the telephone and says he has a party of hunters who came in last night, and that they tried to call but the wires were dead. Robinson admits he went into the swamp, and says he had an idea the phantom might be sort of a ghostly protector of the herd.
