Jimmy Crocker earned the nickname Piccadilly Jim through a career of scandalous headlines, and now he wants nothing more than to live it down, chiefly to win Ann Chester, who despises everything the name stands for. Crossing back to New York, he blunders into a household boiling with imposters, private detectives, and a plot to kidnap his insufferable young cousin Ogden. To court Ann, Jimmy ends up pretending to be someone pretending to be himself, and the disguises pile up from there. Published in 1917, this is Wodehouse at his most intricately plotted, a farce of mistaken identity that clicks together like a fine watch.
