Sarrasine

At a lavish Paris party, an observer sits between two sharply different scenes: the cold, snow-covered garden outside and the bright rooms filled with music, jewels and conversation. Guests speculate about the Lanty family's wealth and origins, while an unusual elderly visitor gives their curiosity a further focus. Honoré de Balzac builds the opening around the habits of fashionable society, where money grants acceptance but secrecy keeps gossip alive.

The middle excerpt turns to Sarrasine, a sculptor overwhelmed by the appearance and singing of La Zambinella. He sees in the performer the ideal proportions he has searched for in his art, and admiration becomes an overpowering attachment. Dating from 1830, this French fiction brings social observation together with the artist's intense response to beauty. Readers encounter detailed portraits of spectators and performers, alongside the tension between outward appearance and private feeling.
