About this book
The dedication presents the work as an attempt to draw a book from mysticism and express the luminous poetry of the Orient. The description of Jarvis places a simply built church above humble dwellings, with a graveyard surrounding the chancel and a parsonage a little farther away. The account describes a stone dwelling called the Swedish Castle by the villagers, explaining that a wealthy Swede settled in Jarvis about thirty years before the history begins.
The narrative says Minna suspected a galley-slave of glory in a man whom Seraphita recognized, and that both admired and pitied him. A speaker calls upon pure spirits to assemble on luminous waves, proposes singing at the gates of the Sanctuary and bids farewell to the earth.
