About this book
This 1888 volume of Victor Hugo's poems in English begins its contents with a memoir of Hugo, then lists early poems, odes dated 1818 to 1828, ballades dated 1823 to 1828, and Les Orientales of 1829. Among the titles are "The Feast of Freedom," "The Grandmother," "The Djinns," "Mazeppa," "Old Ocean" and "My Napoleon."
The memoir follows Hugo's early life through his odes, his plays Cromwell, Amy Robsart, Marion Delorme and Hernani, and an invitation to see Charles X consecrated at Rheims in 1825. One poem shows a leader whose chiefs, soldiers and comrades have fallen, turning to God; a voice answers, "No! Not yet." Another passage addresses someone dear with the line "Thou art my daylight," and its translation is signed Fanny Kemble-Butler.
