About this book
The History of a Crime is Victor Hugo's testimony of an eye-witness, translated by T. H. Joyce and Arthur Locker. The contents open with The First Day, The Ambush, and list chapters such as Paris Sleeps, the Bell Rings, The Black Door, The Mairie of the Tenth Arrondissement and Mazas.
In one passage Commandant Mennier breaks his sword across his knee when Colonel Espinasse comes to relieve his battalion, and De Morny is seen at the Presidency door speaking a few words with M. de Persigny. In another, Lamoricière, Cavaignac and Changarnier travel in carriages with police, passing Creil and Noyon, where they are given a hurried breakfast. A third passage describes barricades, where Bastide leaves his pipe on a paving-stone and relights it when he returns, and Madier de Montjau and Schoelcher are named.
