About this book

The Village Wife's Lament is a work by Maurice Hewlett. A speaker asks what has been done to her and what she has done, with the roof-tree bare and herself all alone. The speaker says she was a new-made wife and now is none.

One section says the Lord of Life did ordain how this world should run, and that He made man but man made war. A speaker says that, standing at her open door, she caught a flying word from two strangers who said that means war. One passage argues that if those who do a nation's work are given their due share of that nation's government, war, the writer firmly believes, will become a dark memory.
