About this book

At the edge of a feared woodland, Elsa finds a possible escape from her unhappy home. The other children flee, but she stays among the strawberries and meets a girl whose invitation opens a world of bright birds and a splendid house. This first tale gives the collection a pattern of ordinary troubles meeting unfamiliar powers, with kindness and danger often close together.

Andrew Lang's preface explains his role as editor of traditional stories translated from several languages. The 1901 collection includes animal tales, enchanted objects and royal adventures, with contributions credited to several translators. In the excerpt from The Fairy of the Dawn, Petru carries precious water towards home while warnings and his brothers' ambitions complicate his return. The short tales offer readers varied examples of folklore, especially the ways familiar family conflicts become tests involving magic, promises and trust.

About the author

Andrew Lang

The Blue Fairy Book of 1889 did well enough for Longmans, Green to keep the series running for a quarter of a century, and Andrew Lang put his name to twenty-five volumes, The Yellow Fairy Book among them in 1894. Much of the labour was his wife's.
