About this book
Polyeucte by Pierre Corneille is given in a translation by Thomas Constable. The introductory note says Pierre Corneille was born in Rouen in 1606, the son of an official. The note says The Cid appeared in 1636, and that a series of masterpieces followed, among them Horace, Cinna, Polyeucte and Le Menteur.
The contents list acts headed with names such as Polyeucte, Nearchus, Severus and Fabian, among others. A speaker marked POLY says he views her tears with a lover's eye, and says he is a Christian. A speaker marked PAUL asks whether his soul can ever blench, and a speaker marked FELIX says that death's mighty flood must every furnace quench. A speaker marked ALBIN says that another may soon rue this dear-bought victory, for he has done what he can never undo.
