About this book

The Cook's Wedding and Other Stories is volume 12 of The Tales of Chekhov, by Anton Pavlovich Chekhov, translated by Constance Garnett. The contents list about two dozen titles, among them Vanka, Kashtanka, A Chameleon, The Bird Market and The Swedish Match.

The title story begins with Grisha, a fat, solemn boy of seven, who stands at the kitchen door peeping through the keyhole at a red-haired peasant in a cabman's coat sitting at the kitchen table. In another passage Varka sees herself in a dark, stuffy hut where her father Yefim lies moaning on the floor, and a young doctor from the town comes in and asks for a light. In Whitebrow, a hungry she-wolf leaves her three cubs asleep in a heap and goes hunting in March.
