About this book

Preludes is a book of poems, published in London in 1875 with illustrations and ornaments by Elizabeth Thompson. It is dedicated to the author's father and mother. The contents list poems such as In Early Spring, Parted, To a Poet, Song of the Spring to the Summer, A Letter from a Girl to Her Own Old Age, Pygmalion, A Tryst That Failed, The Poets and To a Lost Melody, along with several sonnets.

In Parted, a speaker bids farewell to a friend who is silenced and finds him still present in the rain, the summer skies and the flowers. San Lorenzo Giustiniani's Mother has a mother recalling a son who chose the cloister and doubting the face of a visitor from his order. To a Poet describes creatures that fly from the poet who sings through the earth.
