About this book

Mrs. J. Sadlier is the author of Purgatory, subtitled Doctrinal, Historical, and Poetical. The dedication is to the gracious memory of "my dearly-beloved son, Rev. Francis X. Sadlier, S.J.," whose tender devotion to the Souls in Purgatory led him to take a deep and active interest in the progress of the work. A motto calls Purgatory a doctrine blest, engarlanded with legends wild, historic lore and poetry's fair flowers.

The text quotes a saying that the greatest misery of the souls in Purgatory is to behold in themselves aught that displeases God. The text says we find the ealdorman Osulf, "for the redemption and health of his own soul, and of his wife, Beornthrythe," giving certain lands to the Church of Liming, in Kent. A piece headed All Souls' Eve says the lights in Notre Dame blazed round the altar, and that priests were ranged around, chanting the solemn requiem of the dead.

About the author

Mrs. J. Sadlier

Mrs. J. Sadlier was the publishing name of Mary Anne Sadlier, an Irish-born Canadian and American novelist, translator, and editor concerned with faith, migration, and Irish historical memory. The Knout is her translation from French of an anonymous tale set amid Polish resistance to Russian rule, not an original novel under her sole authorship.
