About this book
Sixty Years of California Song is by Margaret Blake Alverson, who dedicates the book to her friends everywhere. The dedication says that if, as a singer and a teacher of singing, she has been a factor in the betterment of individuals and communities, then her work has been well done and she is content. The writer recalls that in 1841 father returned from the eastern Synod with the sad tidings that he had been appointed to go to Cincinnati, Ohio, and that after a journey of three weeks they arrived at the parsonage.
The writer soon found four good voices among the guests, arranged the quartette and practiced together until they could sing with soft effect, and with voices subdued began the song of Home, Sweet Home. A sketch of George G. Peterson says he began his studies at the writer's studio and had a deep bass voice of fine quality, and that he was a devout Christian and prominent worker in the church.
