About this book
Religion and Ceremonies of the Lenape is by M. R. Harrington and is dated New York, 1921. The book carries a native painting by Earnest Spybuck, a Shawnee, titled Conclusion of the Lenape Annual Ceremony in Oklahoma. The contents list opens with a chapter on the pantheon, including the Supreme Being, the Sun, the Moon, Thunder Beings and Mother Corn, followed by a chapter on minor deities and one on the survival of the soul.
In one passage a vision-teller recites his vision while shaking a turtle shell rattle, and those who wish to dance give wampum for the privilege. Another passage says a prayer cry was repeated twelve times during the night. A quotation from Penn describes two people drumming on a board, which Harrington suggests was probably a dried hide. An index covers subjects such as spirits, speech, spoons and spring.
