About this book
At the Rolling R ranch, Johnny Jewel earns his pay breaking horses while dreaming of flying. His verses about riding through the clouds fall into the hands of Mary V, who adds a mocking reply. When the other ranch hands discover the poem, their noisy performance turns a private ambition into a bunkhouse joke. B. M. Bower sets this Western novel among corrals, adobe buildings and desert winds, giving its opening a lively mixture of teasing and wounded pride.
The exchanges between Johnny and Mary V carry that tension into the story. She questions him about a stranger and a puzzling telephone call, while he answers her suspicions with jokes and defiance. Their arguments also touch on his position as her father’s hired man. Readers can follow a ranch world where dreams of airplanes meet everyday work, and affection comes tangled with curiosity and sharp words.
