About this book
The narrative describes a moonlit search for information about whether Sir David Hamilton has set out for Fife, or when his departure is expected. A groom's order to saddle Sir David Hamilton's horses supplies the desired information without any inquiry. The account describes a bark at the pier of Leith, carrying many passengers and ready to sail for Kirkcaldy.
The narrator recalls a neighbourhood permitted for a time to continue religious worship with its own faithful shepherd. The colonel at Ayr is described as humane, despite reports of oppression in Dumfries-shire and Galloway. The narrator says cruel officers replaced the considerate commander and afflicted many inhabitants even unto death.
