About this book

A silver watch looks back on its life from the moment a gentleman buys it for his boy. In a jeweller's display case, watches compare prices, boast about their accuracy and speculate about their future owners. Talbot Baines Reed gives the little timepiece a voice full of pride, anxiety and comic misunderstanding, turning winding, adjustment and a silver chain into events of personal importance.

This children's novel joins school life and lessons in conduct with adventures seen from an unusual observer's pocket. Later, the watch endures the company of a red herring and a pipe while Stumpy Walker wanders through back streets and takes shelter inside a drainage pipe. The contrast between the comfortable shop and this rough lodging gives the story both humour and a close interest in how people treat their belongings and one another.
