About this book
The text says the principal towns of a Province styled Celtic Gaul, and soon known as Gallia Lugdunensis, were still Chartres, Dreux, and, above all, Orléans. The text says Druidism, which had long shown itself a disturbing influence and an irreconcilable factor, was at length proscribed by Tiberius and Claudius. The text says Chartres, it would seem, has more sympathy with the sadder, deeper sides of human life, and speaks of combining the Romanesque and the Gothic styles, the rounded and the pointed arch.
A chapter headed Itinerary and Expeditions offers a scheme that may perhaps prove of use to those who have but a few hours to spend in Chartres and wish to find their way quickly about the picturesque but tortuous streets of the old, lower town. The scheme's directions include leaving the station and going down the Rue Jean de Beauce, among other streets.
