About this book
Stan Bolovan asks for children and receives so many that his household soon struggles to feed them. His search for food leads him to shepherds whose flock is threatened by a dragon, and a piece of soft cheese becomes part of his clever response. This opening tale brings domestic worries into a world of impossible gifts and fearsome creatures. Mite Kremnitz collected the stories, with adaptation and arrangement by J. M. Percival.
Drawn from collections and a literary periodical, the tales place village households beside princes, witches and enchanted objects. Family relationships matter as much as magical powers: brothers become caught in jealousy, while two stepsisters receive unequal treatment. Humor, danger and moral choices give the collection its range. Readers interested in folklore can explore how practical needs, promises and family tensions take shape through these fairy tale characters and situations.
