About this book

In these essays, Rabindranath Tagore connects spiritual life with the ordinary work of living among other people and within nature. Sadhana draws on the Upanishads and the teachings of Buddha, which Tagore describes as sources of personal experience and continuing meaning. The opening contrasts a civilisation shaped by city walls with India's forest traditions, using that contrast to develop an argument for harmony between the individual and the wider world.

The discussion moves through consciousness, evil, selfhood, love, action and beauty. In the middle passage, the body's need for health becomes an analogy for society's need for shared welfare: immediate wishes must find a place within a larger whole. Tagore's examples turn abstract ideas into recognisable tensions between comfort, ambition and responsibility. Readers interested in Hindu philosophy or the relationship between inner life and public conduct will find a connected series of reflections grounded in those concerns.
