About this book

A talkative five-year-old and a travelling seller become unlikely friends in the first of these ten stories by Rabindranath Tagore. Mini's father watches her initial fear give way to jokes, conversation and gifts of almonds and raisins. The collection presents Bengali short stories in English, drawing its people and surroundings from Indian life. The father's account makes room for both the child's curiosity and the adults' misgivings about a stranger.

This 1918 volume was prepared as a reader for Indian students learning English. The preface explains why familiar settings can help students concentrate on language, and the accompanying notes examine words and their origins. Alongside that teaching purpose, the fiction attends closely to domestic feeling: The Castaway opens with a couple debating whether a recovering wife should return home, while a storm shakes their riverside retreat at Chandernagore. Readers can follow the stories for their family relationships and social observations, or use the word studies to explore how English develops.
