About this book

A child's wish to borrow a boat can turn a village wharf into the starting point for an imagined voyage through fairyland. In this 1913 collection, Rabindranath Tagore translates his Bengali poems into English, giving childhood play and longing the space of whole imagined worlds. Children build sand houses, float boats made from leaves and picture flowers attending school beneath the ground. The poems move between ordinary surroundings and the possibilities a child sees in them.

Mothers are frequent listeners and companions in these scenes. A child dreams of becoming a ferryboat operator, crossing the river through the day and returning home hungry; elsewhere, sleep and smiles receive fanciful origins among forests, clouds and moonlight. The short pieces use repetition and direct speech to make these feelings audible. Readers drawn to poems about family life will find tenderness expressed through concrete things: a courtyard, a bamboo grove, a riverbank and the changing evening light.
