About this book

Along Norway's northern coast, deep fiords connect small farms with fishing grounds, mountain pastures and distant markets. Harriet Martineau opens this adventure with the Erlingsen household gathered for a servant's betrothal celebration. Food stores, winter trading and generous hospitality give the farm a distinct rhythm, while descriptions of reflected stars and sounds among the rocks make its remote setting vivid.

Danger enters this closely observed world through boats, hidden anchorages and fears of mountain spirits. Rolf, stranded in a cave with a damaged craft, gathers scraps of wood and nails to attempt repairs before trying the icy water. His thoughts turn to Erica and the uncertainty of returning to her. Nearby, a schooner's crew hears unexplained knocking from an islet. The novel combines suspense on the water with a detailed account of household work and Norwegian social customs.
