About this book
The Burning Spear, by John Galsworthy, is subtitled Being the Experiences of Mr. John Lavender in the Time of War. The Minister says you'll have to use gas, and we don't pay, and Mr. Lavender cries Pay! with horror. Mr. Lavender says he has studied all the great orators of the war and is familiar with all the great writers on it. Mr. Lavender turned and went out, and the text also has him opening the wrong door and finding himself in the presence of six little girls in brown frocks, sitting against the walls with their thumbs in their mouths.
Chapter II, headed The Valet, has Joe Petty standing and contemplating a car purchased some fifteen years before. Joe, pouring out the wine, tells Mr. Lavender that try as he likes he will never be a public man, words which seemed to Mr. Lavender to seal his doom.
