About this book
Sappho brings together a memoir, the text, selected renderings and a literal translation, with the stated aim of making every word of the poetess familiar to English readers whether they understand Greek or not. The translator says the work translates all the fragments that the latest editor thinks may be ascribed to the poetess, and describes the prose translation as literal.
The account of Sappho's life is described as being as complete as the available materials allowed, while the fragments follow the order of the text almost invariably used. A translated fragment presents Love as a force that masters the limbs and shakes the speaker, a creature both fatal and bitter-sweet.
