About this book

An imperial order to cast an enormous bell turns a foundry task into a family crisis in the opening tale of this 1887 collection. Kouan-Yu gathers skilled workers, but repeated failures place him in danger, and his daughter Ko-Ngai seeks advice from an astrologer. Lafcadio Hearn sets the scene through the sound of the bell, temple roofs, incense and the changing colors of molten metal.

The six legends connect strange events with familiar objects and institutions: a bell, a tea plant, porcelain, an imperial court. In another excerpt, the figure of Tchin-King appears before the emperor, with the painted wall visible through him. Notes and a glossary accompany the stories. Readers interested in Chinese legends and richly descriptive supernatural fiction will find a short collection where devotion, authority and the boundary between earthly life and the spirit world shape the tales.
