About this book
Sketch of a New Esthetic of Music presents notes described as loosely joined in literary form, but arising from convictions long held and slowly matured. The discussion assigns the arts a common aim in the imitation of nature and the interpretation of human feelings. The text compares music to a child that has learned to walk but still needs to be led.
The section on major and minor treats the establishment of music upon those two series as a limitation. The discussion describes the contrasting characters attributed to the keys as symbols of contentment and discontent, joy and sorrow, light and shade.
