About this book

A widow in Erin saves for her clever son's schooling, only to hear that he intends to become a thief. This opening to The Lilac Fairy Book introduces the Shifty Lad, whose tricks put his mother's hopes for an honest trade to the test. Edited by Andrew Lang, the 1910 collection brings together fairy tales and folklore from places including Ireland, Wales, Portugal and Asia.

The stories move between cleverness, hardship and the strange possibilities of fairy tale worlds. In another passage, a girl earns food by lending her cooking pot to neighbours, then grows pumpkins that give her a new means of support. Her success stirs her brother's envy. Such scenes give everyday objects and family tensions a place alongside the enchanted creatures named in the contents. Readers interested in older storytelling traditions can compare short tales with different settings, customs and ways of rewarding resourcefulness.

About the author

Andrew Lang

The Blue Fairy Book of 1889 did well enough for Longmans, Green to keep the series running for a quarter of a century, and Andrew Lang put his name to twenty-five volumes, The Yellow Fairy Book among them in 1894. Much of the labour was his wife's.
