About this book
St. Benedict's Rule for Monasteries is translated from the Latin by Leonard J. Doyle, from the third edition of the text edited by Dom Cuthbert Butler. The table of contents begins with a Prologue and chapters on the kinds of monks, what kind of man the abbot ought to be, calling the brethren for counsel, the instruments of good works, obedience, the spirit of silence and humility, and goes on to the divine office during the night.
Chapter 10 gives directions for how the Night Office is said in summer time, with one lesson from the Old Testament said by heart and never fewer than twelve Psalms. Chapter 48, On the Daily Manual Labor, opens with the line that idleness is the enemy of the soul and sets out hours for labor and for sacred reading. Another passage lists the degrees of humility, among them restraining the tongue and keeping silence until questioned.
