About this book
The Daughter of a Soldier, subtitled A Colleen of South Ireland, is by L. T. Meade. The contents list names, among others, chapters called Kingsala by the Sea, The Major and His Child, Colonel Herbert to the Rescue and Summer With an East Wind. Maureen tells Dominic that there is only the world and it is cold, and that she knows very little, for she has not been taught much.
Dominic swears that he will share his very last crust with Maureen. The master and Maureen have read the words on a bottle: "Laudanum. POISON. Not to be taken internally." Daisy stands sobbing before them, having emptied the greater part of the bottle into the mash. Henrietta cries "Oh, Dinah, Dinah dear!" and no words of any sort come from Dinah.
