About this book

A father's pride in his son's imperial honours sets a portrait commission in motion in one of Mór Jókai's tales. The Starosta wants an imposing picture of Casimir Moskowski, whose reported promotion in Vienna fills him with delight. With the help of the pastor Gottlieb Klausner, he prepares to receive the painting at Bialystok. The arrival becomes an elaborate occasion, with a huge packing case, carpenters and dinner with the governor.

Translated from Hungarian by R. Nisbet Bain, this collection brings together nine stories, accompanied by a biography of the author. Historical narratives sit alongside comic sketches, darker tales and a ghost story, while another piece imagines the lost island of Atlantis. The range gives readers a way to compare Jókai's treatment of everyday social pretensions with his interest in history and fantastic settings, moving between family expectations, official rank and more extraordinary events.
