About this book
The Adventurer is by Cyril M. Kornbluth. The opening lines say that for every evil under the sun there is an answer, which may be a simple, direct answer or one that takes years and seems unrelated to the problem. President Folsom XXIV says petulantly to his Secretary of the Treasury that he did not understand a single word of that, and asks why he cannot buy the Nicolaides Collection.
The Secretary of the Treasury answers, with an air of apprehension, that it boils down to no money. In another scene, panels slide down in the walls to reveal grim-faced Secret Servicemen, and each Cabinet officer is covered by at least two automatic rifles. The President Elect calls Dr. Barnes over, saying he wants to know about his father's passing. A speaker says there are common denominators among all the adventurers, with always an Oedipus complex, always physical deficiency and always a minority disability, real or fancied.
