About this book
An old barrel at the top of a hill gives Peter Rabbit an idea for a joke, but Jimmy Skunk is sleeping inside it. Peter hopes to involve Reddy Fox without revealing his own part in the scheme. He provokes Sammy Jay into making a racket, draws the fox toward him, and begins a chase that puts his clever plan to a dangerous test. Thornton W. Burgess sets these animal encounters around the Green Meadows, the Old Orchard and the Green Forest.
The short chapters combine a conversational narrator with verses that point out the cost of thoughtless behavior. In the middle excerpt, Jimmy considers whether to return to Peter's hiding place, then decides that keeping his word matters even when it is inconvenient. Peter, meanwhile, has to cope with fear, hunger and insect stings. These everyday motives give the talking animals distinct personalities and offer young readers concrete situations for thinking about responsibility and trust.
